It produces extreme thoughts to the mind, and therefore changing your actions, as well as your speech. Thus, the fear of losing will make a person do ridiculous or dangerous things to prevent such to happen. Actions such as spying, stealing, pure selfishness, and many more which will in turn hurt the one who he is protecting. As well as himself.
This makes it part of the root of evil.
